Your journey to recovery
The first step is you. You have to say that you can.

The best treatment and the surgeon’s expertise
Ankle osteoarthritis is a debilitating condition that often affects young people in the prime of their social and professional lives. Its impact on quality of life can be significant.
Research shows that having access to a specialized medical team greatly increases the chances of receiving advanced, safe, and effective treatment options.
Choosing a surgeon who is dedicated to this specific pathology is essential. It allows patients to access movement-preserving treatments—such as ankle replacement and joint-preserving surgeries—that can effectively relieve pain and restore function.
A dedicated team and fast-track access
However, it is equally important to rely on a fully dedicated team.
Today, my team performs around 150 ankle prosthesis procedures each year, following specific treatment and rehabilitation protocols that involve physiotherapists and rehab specialists with unique qualities.
Our rehabilitation team leaders stand out for three distinctive characteristics:
- They have personal experience with ankle arthritis;
- They have undergone ankle prosthesis surgery themselves;
- They were operated on and treated by my team.
This is what we consider an added value for achieving optimal outcomes.
It is a key element of our Fast-Track protocol, because successful surgery begins with informed patients before entering the operating room and concludes only when rehabilitation is complete.
Who is the ideal candidate for a consultation?
Ankle arthritis is not as common as hip or knee osteoarthritis. This is why we believe it is essential to consult a specialized center with an experienced reference team.
The ideal candidate for a consultation at my center is someone seeking a second opinion, having already undergone a specialist orthopedic evaluation and received surgical recommendations—such as arthroscopic debridement, ankle replacement, or arthrodesis.
To ensure an effective and comprehensive evaluation, it is important to include the following documentation when booking the appointment:
- Reports from previous orthopedic consultations over the years;
- Imaging reports, which must include:
- Weight-bearing X-rays of both feet and ankles;
- A CT scan of the ankle and hindfoot on the affected side only.
It is essential that the patient has already had a specialist orthopedic assessment locally before contacting us as a reference center. For this reason, we ask that a certificate of this prior consultation be attached.
However, if it is not possible to complete the required imaging beforehand, these investigations can be arranged prior to the visit through our International Medical Concierge service, which will coordinate the necessary prescriptions and imaging immediately before the consultation.
How to book an appointment?
You can book your visit via email by filling out the dedicated form.
The form serves as a tool for me to review the necessary clinical details in preparation for our meeting. You will be asked to attach the following:
- General information about your primary care physician;
- A report from your previous orthopedic consultation;
- Imaging reports required for the evaluation (weight-bearing X-rays of both feet and ankles, and a CT scan of the ankle and hindfoot on the affected side). If any of these tests have not yet been performed, our concierge will assist in organizing them.
You’ll also be able to indicate your preferred appointment times (month and day of the week), so our concierge can do their best to accommodate your schedule.
Finally, you will have the option to provide general information to help us plan additional services, such as:
- Airport transfers;
- Hotel and restaurant reservations;
- Tour and museum bookings for accompanying guests;
- Showroom visits to leading Italian fashion and design brands.
What to expect during your consultation
The consultation will take place at my office in Milan, located on Via Regina Margherita.
We will have a 30-minute appointment during which I will provide a diagnosis and therapeutic recommendations. It will also be a time for open discussion, where I will address your questions and any concerns you may have.
If you choose to proceed with treatment planning through our concierge service, a follow-up meeting can be arranged with one of our rehabilitation specialists.
I strongly recommend including this in your visit, as all of our lead rehabilitation therapists are former patients who now live with ankle prostheses themselves.
If you opt for this additional session, it will also be possible to meet with me again afterward to further review your case, clarify any remaining doubts, and ensure all your questions are fully answered.
Surgery and recovery process
Surgery can be scheduled at either the Columbus Clinic Center or Humanitas San Pio X, both located in Milan.
Admission to the clinic takes place the day before the procedure.
The surgery itself is performed the following morning.
Ankle replacement surgery typically lasts less than 90 minutes.
According to the guidelines of our Fast-Track protocol, patients are usually assisted to stand and begin walking—with weight-bearing on the operated limb—on the same afternoon as the procedure.
During your hospital stay, you will also have the opportunity to meet with one of our rehabilitation team leaders.
This is a particularly valuable moment, as our team leader is a former patient who has undergone the same surgery and now lives with an ankle prosthesis—just like you.
He is the ideal professional to guide and motivate you in the early stages of walking again, offering both clinical expertise and a uniquely personal perspective.
Hospital discharge
Hospital discharge usually takes place the day after surgery or within two days, depending on clinical parameters that are typically assessed during the preoperative visit.
At the time of discharge, the patient is generally fit to travel by car, train, or plane. Our concierge service is available to assist with transportation to and from airports or train stations.
However, I recommend avoiding long-distance travel for the first 15 days following surgery.
Follow-up appointments and rehabilitation
Three follow-up checkups are required within the first year:
- At 20 days: with an orthopedist from my team;
- At 3 months: first follow-up with me;
- At 6 months: third follow-up with me
Throughout the recovery process, one of my team’s orthopedists will follow your progress with bi-weekly remote check-ins. In addition, your assigned rehabilitation specialist will be available to coordinate weekly with your local physiotherapist.
If the patient has the opportunity to spend the first 45 days of recovery in Italy, we offer the possibility of an intensive and personalized rehabilitation program. This experience can be further enriched with customized tourist activities in Milan and across Italy for the patient and any accompanying guests.
